What is submission?

Hello wifey,

Guess's what!!!

Today's post will be about submission.

I can see someone putting up that usual face that always come up whenever we hear submission.

No worries, we are going to be looking at scriptures, so just calm down, read and enjoy.

What is submission?

To submit means to willingly or voluntarily choose to put oneself under another person's authority or leadership.

Notice those two words, 'willingly' and 'voluntarily'.

Submission is a choice, it's an act of one's will, it's a deliberate action, that we carry out, based on knowledge, not based on some sort of coercing. You cannot be coerced to submit. In fact, the moment it becomes coercion, it's no longer submission, it has become oppression.

We submit because we have knowledge of God's word. Therefore, our knowledge of God's word is very important in our ability to submit. Submission is not cultural nor traditional. Submission is scriptures. And that's why my focus will be on what God says  to do, because God's word is our life🙌🏾🙌🏾.

One thing I have realized is that submission is a subject that makes us raise eyebrows. When we hear submission, our ears are already up and our tongues are already ready in defence. Submission, however is the lifestyle of a Christian. When we became born again, we were called into submission.

Jesus is our *Lord* and our Saviour.

And He is also the perfect example of submission.

Looking through the scriptures, we would see instructions to submit to different categories of people,  showing that when we became Christians, we were called into a lifestyle of submission.

What is submission?

And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was *subject* unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.” Luke 2:51 (KJV)

Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are *subject* to us in Your name.” Luke 10:17 NKJV

Let every soul be *subject* to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Romans 13:1 NKJV

Therefore *submit* yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for  the praise of those who do good. I Peter 2:13‭-‬14 NKJV

I urge you, brethren—you know the household of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves to the ministry of the saints— that you also *submit* to such, and to everyone who works and labors with us. I Corinthians 16:15‭-‬16 NKJV

*Submitting* yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” Ephesians 5:21 (KJV)

Servants, be *submissive* to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh. I Peter 2:18 NKJV

*Submit* yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 (KJV)

Wives, *submit* to your own husbands, as to the Lord. Ephesians 5:22 NKJV

Therefore, just as the church is *subject* to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Ephesians 5:24 NKJV

Wives, *submit* to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Colossians 3:18 NKJV

“Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being *subject* to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.” Titus 2:3-5 (NASB)

Wives, likewise, be  *submissive* to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, I Peter 3:1 NKJV

For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being *submissive* to their own husbands, I Peter 3:5 NKJV

So, in these scriptures, we see the use of submitting asides the marriage context as well as in the marriage context.

Submission in the marriage context is not a special kind of submission. It's the same submission that we see in every other place where the scripture says to submit.

What is submission?

Why do I say this?

The word most commonly translated submit or subjection in the new testament is 'hupotasso'.

Looking at the meaning of hupotasso.

Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance Greek Dictionary

hupotassō G5293

From G5259 and G5021; to subordinate; reflexively to obey: – be under obedience (obedient), put under, subdue unto, (be, make) subject (to, unto), be (put) in subjection (to, under), submit self unto.

Thayer’s Greek Definitions

hupotassō G5293

1) to arrange under, to subordinate

2) to subject, put in subjection

3) to subject one’s self, obey

4) to submit to one’s control

5) to yield to one’s admonition or advice

6) to obey, be subject

I am sure you don't raise an eye brow when you hear submit yourselves to God, neither do you raise an eye brow when you hear that church is subject to Christ., Therefore no need to raise an eyebrow when you hear that wives submit to your husbands😀. It's still that same submit, not a special kind of submit.

Biblical submission is a voluntary attitude. It is not motivated by rules, regulations, coercion or force. Rather it is motivated by:

1. Reverence and love for God

2. Love for your husband

3. Recognition of authority

4. Knowledge

I will dive more into these in my subsequent posts.

  1. "Biblical submission is a voluntary attitude." Yes, it's not done out of duty but honor and love for God and our spouse. This was wonderful. Thank you for all of the scriptural truths!!
